Olson, who operates the Stark County Political Report, which covers local politics in Stark County, Ohio, recorded Davison during the September 8 meeting of the local Republican Party Executive Committee, at which Davison sought the party’s nomination for County Treasurer. In his original posting of the video to the Huffington Post, Olson reported:
Davison rocked the assembly . . . with his impassioned political presentation the likes of which few politically involved citizens have ever seen
Though Davison did not win the nomination, the speech went viral, leading to intense public interest. Davison made numerous media appearances, including interviews with Good Morning America, America Live, and Tosh.0. In addition, he sought higher office, briefly campaigning for the Boston Tea Party’s 2012 presidential nomination. Last summer, he expressed interest in the Libertarian Party’s 2016 presidential nomination.
Davison credits Olson for the attention received. However, widespread dissemination of Olson’s video resulted from unauthorized uploads to YouTube, particularly the copy that user TheOnlyGodIsZeus uploaded, which received nearly 3 million views before the user closed his account in October 2011. Thereafter, the upload from YouTube user jdlech became the most widely viewed copy with about 1 million hits until it was removed this past month, when Olson made a copyright claim.
In Olson’s newly uploaded official version, the video opens a few seconds earlier than the copies, showing Davison move a microphone before beginning his speech.
