The level of hate aimed at President Donald Trump in the political sphere is much greater than what any of his predecessors faced. Members of Congress have endorsed public harassment of cabinet members, accused the President of capital crimes, and even suggested a military coup to remove the President from power. People in such prominent positions of power would never have even considered such careless rhetoric in the darkest days of the Bush and Obama presidencies. But we have entered a new era. Trump threatens the established order, and so, he and his followers are forced to feel the wrath.
A War rages in Washington. The fate of a nation at stake. For decades one side sat silent as the other enriched itself, stagnated the culture and economy, and intervened unnecessarily in the never-ending cycle of violence worldwide. In 2016 the American people had had enough. They elected a President who stood against the established order and promised to “drain the Swamp” of corrupt influences. In response, the established order doubled down in its war. Through the news media, it brainwashed segments of the populace into believing the President fascist, white supremacist, and “literally Hitler.” Suddenly, by virtue of his words alone, the President was worse than those who wrought actual death and destruction upon the nation. But this was not enough. It just made a coup more palatable. The establishment had to invent a scandal to justify ousting the duly elected President and replacing him with one of their own. Since I published “Fake News” three months ago, the meaning of that particular phrase has changed. It has morphed from a tool of the corporate media to silence citizen journalists into a weapon of the Trump administration to attack the corporate media. Every time I read the news, I hear about so-called “fake news.” “Fake news” spread Russian propaganda. “Fake news” invented Clinton scandals. “Fake news” elected Donald Trump. “Fake news” has destroyed American democracy. And now, the mere mention of a “fake news” story could cause the loss of life.
